When to purchase your sleeping accommodations

An important part of saving money is to book your sleeping accommodations, when should you do it?

Well first off, are you going to be renting a vacation home? Staying in a hotel? Staying in a hostel? This is important to know, because each is different.

  1. Hotels

You will want to book your hotels about 4-6 weeks before your arrival date. Often times hotels are marked cheapest one month out from when you want to book. There is no need to rush getting your hotels booked months in advance, if you want to save money.

2.  Renting

If you are renting a room or home through Airbnb, VRBO, etc you will want to book your rental as soon as possible. Rates can go up the closer you get to your arrival date as well as your choices of rentals will go down. Renting is a very popular vacation trend right now, so homes book up fast. I would suggest booking your rental a few months before your trip or at least as soon as you know you want to go on a trip and book a rental. You do not want to be stuck with limited choices, if you wait until last minute, and you have a budget to stick to.

3. Hostiles

Hostiles can be booked the day of. Simply just go to the hostile and pay the small fee for the night. Hostiles will usually have beds available at any time. However, if you do want to plan in advance, like myself, you can go onto the website called Hostile World. This site shows you all the hostiles in the area you will be staying and how many rooms and beds are available. You can book and pay for the hostile in advance through this website.

What is your preference of places to stay in when you vacation on a budget?

I studied abroad in Europe and I used a mix of AirBnB’s and Hostiles. I would travel with a crowd of between 1-6 people. When there were fewer of us we would typically go for the hostile, they were typically a better price. When there were 3+ of us we could often save money and get an AirBnB. AirBnB’s were the best when we got private homes/ apartments. These were easy to relax in not having to worry about securing belongings, also they felt a bit cleaner. I really enjoyed one of my hostile stays when I traveled alone, I met people from 4 different continents and was able to try new things with new people.
